World Refugee Awareness Week

 Groups across Lansing are coming together June 14th- June 20TH to honor and celebrate refugees in our community with a week-long schedule of events.  World Refugee Awareness Week is the City of Lansing’s celebration of World Refugee Day.  This day was established by the United Nations to honor the courage, strength and determination of women, men and children who are forced to flee their homes under threat of persecution, conflict and violence.  Every year the UN recognizes June 20th as World Refugee Day and large cities across the globe create elaborate festivals and events to celebrate.  Join us June 14th -20th as Lansing celebrates the hundreds of refugees resettled in our community! The week is sponsored by Meijer, REACH Studio Art Center, and Playmakers.

 ·         Sunday, June 14thRefugee Sunday.  Faith based organizations in the greater Lansing area speak to the importance of welcoming and serving refugees in our community.

 ·         Monday, June 15thGlobal Institute of Lansing (GIL) Graduation, First Presbyterian Church, 510 W Ottawa St., Lansing: 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.  Join the Global Institute as they honor refugee students receiving their high school diploma.

 ·         Tuesday, June 16th – “Reflections on a Journey.” REACH Studio Art Center, 1804 S. Washington Ave., Lansing: 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.  Join Lutheran Social Services of Michigan at REACH Studio Art Center’s new gallery for the unveiling of a mural created by refugee youth in the Lansing community and guest artist Abbey Hoffman.  Homemade cultural food will be available to sample. 

 ·         Wednesday, June 17thAllen Neighborhood Center Farmer’s Market. Allen Neighborhood Center (ANC), 1619 E. Kalamazoo St., Lansing: 2:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.  Join ANC at their weekly Farmers Market to experience the culture of a local refugee group. 

 ·         Thursday, June 18thPeace Pole Unveiling and Press Conference.  Department of Health and Human Services, 5303 S. Cedar Street, Lansing. 1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. St. Vincent Catholic Charities has teamed with the Department of Health and Human Services to install a Peace Pole on the Ingham County campus.  The Peace Pole project brings together immigrants, refugees and U.S. –born community members in a spirit of unity.

 ·         Friday, June 19th Movie Day at CADL Downtown. Capital Area District Libraries – Downtown Branch (CADL), 401 S. Capitol Ave, Lansing: 2:00 p.m.  CADL is pleased to present an amazing film starring Reese Witherspoon that chronicles the experience of Sudanese refugees given the chance to resettle in Kansas City, Missouri.

 ·         Saturday, June 20th – Welcoming the Stranger: 5K Family Fun Run.  Hawk Island Park, 1601 E. Cavanaugh St., Lansing: 7:30 a.m./9:00 a.m.  Hosted by St. Vincent Catholic Charities, the race is FREE to register.  All attendees are asked to please bring a new or gently used household items to donate in support of the STVCC Refugee Resettlement Program.  Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and the race begins at 9:00 a.m.  Visit to register. 

 ·         Saturday, June 20th – World Refugee Day. Each year on June 20th the United Nations and countless civic groups around the world celebrate World Refugee Day.  The day was established by the United Nations to honor the courage, strength and determination of women, men and children who are forced to flee their homes under threat of persecution, conflict and violence.  We invite the city of Lansing to join us today in celebrating the many different refugee populations resettled in Lansing each year.
