The Hatching, Lansing’s Business Pitch Competition, Celebrates 2nd Anniversary

LANSING, MI – The Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP) and Spartan Innovations celebrated the 2nd anniversary of The Hatching at its monthly business pitch competition event on June 25, 2015 at Dublin Square in East Lansing. Local entrepreneurs and supporters attended the event to cheer on the
next big idea they’d like to see hatch in Lansing.

The winning idea was Cutting the Cable: A Wireless Fencing Scoring Device. By utilizing the wireless communications of smartphones, the idea would be to create a low cost adapter to replace expensive scoring equipment for fencing.

The Hatching is part of a community-wide effort to support local entrepreneurs and make the Lansing region a great place to start a business. This event helps move new, local business ideas from concept to reality and provides winners with funding, legal support, market research, office space and more.

For the past two years, The Hatching has had a huge impact within the Lansing region. Since its inception, 210 ideas have been submitted and $43,500 in prizes were awarded, which resulted in 27 companies and 46 jobs created.

“We are so excited The Hatching has taken off like it has. Our goal is for Lansing to become a thriving area for startup business. As more entrepreneurs start new businesses, the more we’ll see
the Lansing region prosper,” said Tony Willis, Director, New Economy Division at LEAP.
