Peckham Community Partnership Foundation Hosts October Speaker Series

Stand-up Comic and Disability Advocate, Maysoon Zayid comes to Lansing


LANSING, Mich. – Tuesday, October 13 the  Peckham Community Partnership Foundation will host its biannual Speaker Series event in celebration of National Disability Employment Awareness Month. This event features Maysoon Zayid, Arab-American comedienne, actress and disability advocate.  With humor and compassion Zayid will share her story of family, culture and living with cerebral palsy while breaking into mainstream media.  

The greater Lansing community is invited to hear Zayid speak Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2015. The morning session will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., and the afternoon session from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.

The event will take place at Peckham Inc., 3510 Capital City Blvd.

About Maysoon:         Maysoon Zayid is an actress, professional standup comedian, and writer. She

received a BA in Acting from Arizona State University and is the co-founder/co-executive producer of the New York Arab American Comedy Festival. Maysoon was a full-time On-Air Contributor to Countdown with Keith Olbermann, and has recently appeared on The Queen Latifah Show and Huffington Post Live.


Maysoon's screenplay, LAW, was chosen for the Sundance Middle Eastern Screenwriters Lab. She was a delegate at the 2008 Democratic National Convention and named one of 21 leaders of the 21st century by Women's Enews. She is the founder of Maysoon's Kids, an education and wellness program for disabled and wounded refugee children.

Zayid spends three months a year in the Palestinian territories, running an arts program for disabled and orphaned children in refugee camps. She helps the children use art to deal with trauma and bridge the gap between disabled and non-disabled children. Eighty percent of the funding for the camps comes from her comedy work.
