Sarah Jennings Named 2015 ATHENA Award Recipient

Principal at Maner Costerisan to be Honored at Annual ATHENA Award Luncheon on December 17

(Lansing, MI) – Sarah Jennings, CPA, CFE, principal at Maner Costerisan Certified Public Accountants , will be honored by the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce as the 2015 ATHENA Award recipient. Jennings, will be honored at the annual ATHENA Award Luncheon on Thursday, December 17. The luncheon will take place from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center in East Lansing.

“The ATHENA Leadership Award honors men and women who strive toward the highest levels of professional accomplishment, who excel in their chosen field, who have devoted time and energy to their community, and who pave paths for others to follow,” said Jeffrey C. Stevens, president of Maner Costerisan and one of the individuals who nominated Sarah for the ATHENA Award. “While this is an extraordinary high threshold for anyone to live up to, Sarah Jennings absolutely approaches everything she does with the goal of promoting and supporting balanced leadership and inspiring women to achieve their full potential.”

Jennings, an outstanding certified public accountant (CPA) and certified fraud examiner (CFE), saw the need for a strong women’s advocacy group in Mid-Michigan. Along with four other women, Jennings founded the Women’s Interest Network (WIN). WIN became an organization that offered professional development, education, mentorship, access to informal mentors (Lansing’s most influential women), and networking opportunities to women in Lansing.

Working closely with the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce, ATHENA WIN was created and organized under the Lansing Regional Development Foundation. Jennings looked to expand this program further. Achieving this effort, The Emerging Leaders program was purchased through ATHENA International. Here, participants discuss one topic per month based on the ATHENA Leadership Model and Becoming ATHENA, written by Martha Mertz.

Sarah Jennings was also instrumental in the decision by ATHENA International to bring its annual convention, IGNITE to Lansing in September 2016.

In addition to all that she does with ATHENA WIN, Jennings also supports and volunteers fearlessly in other organizations in Lansing. Jennings supports First Tee of Mid-Michigan where young people are introduced to Nine Core Values while learning golf, similar to the Eight Tenets of Leadership taught in Becoming ATHENA. Jennings also supports the American Red Cross and Lansing Symphony Orchestra, while staying involved at her son’s preschool. Jennings’ latest community endeavor is Hatching, where she provides answers and advice to local entrepreneurs on accounting start-up questions and attends monthly meetings with other professionals.

Started in Lansing in 1982 by Martha Mertz, the ATHENA Award is presented annually in over 500 communities internationally, recognizing individuals for professional excellence, for providing valuable service to the community and for actively assisting all women in their attainment of professional excellence and leadership skills. By honoring exceptional leaders, the ATHENA Award seeks to inspire others to achieve excellence.
