(Lansing, Mich.) — If your plan for ringing in the new year calls for a night out on the town, be advised that CATA will no longer offer its Safe Ride Home program.

“Usage has steadily declined over the past 10 years,” explained CATA CEO/Executive Director Sandy Draggoo. “In 2005, we safely transported 395 riders from their final stop on New Year’s Eve to their homes’ doorsteps. In 2014, Safe Ride Home ridership plummeted to a mere 118 trips. In our ongoing diligence to serve as good stewards of the public funds used to promote and operate this service, we recognize that people have found other ways to get home and that the demand for Safe Ride Home has tapered off dramatically, to the point where we can no longer justify it.”

Draggoo attributes the change in customer usage to a preference among New Year’s Eve revelers to travel from venue to venue rather than from venue to home.

For safe transportation alternatives, CATA recommends local taxi services as well as Uber.
