New Lansing Development will connect Downtown to REO Town
Project will redevelop a surface lot on the corner of S. Washington and
St. Joseph Hwy

LANSING, MI – Mayor Virg Bernero and LEAP announced today that a surface parking lot at 616 S. Washington Avenue will be the site of a new, mixed-use building comprised of  approximately 13,000 square feet of class A office space and 50 high-end residential units.

The project, known as South Edge Lofts, is led by Roger Thornburg of Investors Equity Group and Joe Biersbach of Biersbach Development.  The project was preliminarily announced in 2014 with Lansing City Council approving a zoning change that cleared the way for development of the site.

Investors Equity Group plans to invest $13 million to develop this lot occupying the block between South Washington and Capitol Avenues along St. Joseph Street. The façades of existing buildings (the Blake House and 617 S. Capitol Avenue) will be incorporated into the proposed building.

“I couldn’t be more pleased to see this site get a new lease on life,” said Mayor Virg Bernero.  “The southern border of our downtown is ripe for development and Roger and his team are the right developers to make it happen.”

“This project will help draw development south and connect the downtown to the REO Town neighborhood,” said Bob Trezise, President and CEO of LEAP.  “This is a high-traffic corner and this development will accelerate our continuing efforts to grow Lansing and attract and retain young talent.”

The South Edge Lofts project will be considered for a 17-year brownfield tax incentive by the Lansing Brownfield Redevelopment Authority on Friday.  The brownfield incentive will also require approval by the Lansing City Council.  The project is expected to begin construction this spring.
