The Information Technology Empowerment Center (ITEC), a Lansing-based nonprofit organization, has been awarded a $25,000 grant from the Consumers Energy Foundation.

Funding will support the completion of ITEC’s new TechTransport bus, a mobile learning lab designed to bring technology to Lansing area residents with limited access to home computers and the Internet. With TechTransport, ITEC will be able to expand its reach in the Lansing community providing enriching science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education programs to 2,500 students annually. ITEC expects TechTransport to be on the road this February.

“STEM education is a critical piece of the puzzle to prepare Michigan’s next generation of leaders and employees to work at companies like ours,” said David Mengebier, president of the Consumers Energy Foundation. “We’re excited to help the TechTransport bus bring opportunities right to the doorstep of students in the Lansing community.”

Once up and running, TechTransport will provide:

  • A mobile teaching platform that includes robotics, digital media, game design, animation programming, web and app development, 3-D printing and much more
  • Everyday digital classes in basic computer literacy for high school students and adults
  • Financial literacy workshops, in partnership with MSUFCU
  • College readiness workshops, in partnership with the Capital College Access Network
  • After-school tutoring programs in math and science
  • GED preparation
  • Entrepreneurship classes

“We really appreciate the Consumers Energy Foundation for joining us in getting TechTransport on the road,” said Kirk Riley, ITEC’s executive director. “TechTransport is sure to be the place where students come to dream and to do. Who knows, maybe we’ll see the next big inventor or blockbuster movie animator come from one of our classes.”
