The Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce (LRCC) commends the City of East Lansing for its decision to create a Financial Health Team (FHT) to help guide the city and develop strategies to erase more than $100 million in unfunded liabilities. The East Lansing City Council appointed the 11 member FHT at its meeting on Tuesday night.

“The issue of unfunded liabilities is a top advocacy priority of the Chamber in 2016. These legacy costs have a significant impact on local governments and our region’s ability to attract business investment and jobs,” said Tim Daman, LRCC president and chief executive officer. “This is an important step for East Lansing to explore options and develop a reasonable and responsible plan for addressing its fiscal challenges.”

LRCC was also pleased that a number of Chamber members and representatives of the business community were named to the East Lansing FHT, including current LRCC Board member Trish Foster of CBRE Martin, former LRCC Board Chair James Butler, Jeff Hicks of Mercantile Bank and Aaron Harris of Northwestern Mutual.

“We have seen first-hand the critical importance of having the voice of business at the table,” said Daman. “We have been very supportive of the City of Lansing FHT and look forward to working in a similar capacity to support the work of the East Lansing team as well.”

LRCC strongly encourages the City of East Lansing to use the FHT as an opportunity to prioritize its core services and potentially scale back or eliminate services that can no longer be afforded.

“Communities can no longer afford to be all things to all people,” said Steve Japinga, LRCC director of government relations. “This is a great opportunity to identify the real priorities that citizens want and make some tough choices about other programs.”
