Annual 5K, 10K, and Kids Mile and Sprint race set for March 19, 2016

The Ronald McDonald House of Mid-Michigan’s Run for the House will kick off the 2016 Playmakers Greater Lansing Race Series. The Run for the House, presented by Delta Dental, takes place Saturday, March 19, 2016. New this year, the Run for the House’s participation in the Greater Lansing Race Series is expanded to include all the races — the 5K, 10K, and Kids Mile and Sprint. The 5K and 10K races begin at 10 a.m. starting at Delta Dental’s campus, 4100 Okemos Road in Okemos, Michigan.

Playmakers, along with its partners, works with local races to host events that provide runners with opportunities to excel as well as support causes and organizations like the Ronald McDonald House in our local community. The Greater Lansing Race Series is now a participation series. Runners will receive credit for participation in each Race Series event to earn cool swag.

“Playmakers has been a huge part of our ability to host a successful Run,” says Carolyn Hurst, executive director of the Ronald McDonald House of Mid-Michigan. “Playmakers team members have served on our committee, hosted packet pickup, shared equipment and lent us their knowledge and expertise over the years as we have grown our race. We’re honored to grow our partnership with the Race Series to include not only the 5K, but also the 10K and Kids’ Mile.”

The Run for the House raises funds for the Ronald McDonald House of Mid-Michigan, a homeaway-from-home for families whose child is hospitalized or receiving treatment. Each year, the House hosts hundreds of families who stay an average of more than two weeks. The House receives 79 percent of its annual funding from the community, including money raised through events such as the Run for the House. The 2015 Run for the House grossed nearly $63,000 for families staying at the House. In terms of support, this could provide one of the following: 6,300 nights of lodging, 18,000 loads of laundry or 1,050 hot meals.

“We truly are a community-supported organization,” says Hurst. “That’s why it’s so important to us to have a Run people want to come back to year after year. Being part of the Playmakers Race Series is a great chance for us to get even more connected with the running community and help them learn about and support this local asset.”

The Run for the House also features a Kids Mile and Sprint for kids 12 and under starting at 9:30 a.m. In addition to the Kids Mile and Sprint, the Run for the House features the Independent Bank Kids Carnival with games and activities for the whole family from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Delta Dental campus.

“The House is focused on families, and we want our events to reflect that,” says Hurst. “This is a great chance for families to get out and kick off spring in a healthy way that gives back to their community.”
