On June 8, 2016 approximately 62 deserving Veterans from Michigan will be flying to Washington, D.C. with the Mid-Michigan Honor Flight Hub.  Mid-Michigan Honor Flight ( is an official Regional Hub of the national Honor Flight Network ( whose mission is to send Veterans to Washington, D.C. on a “Tour of Honor” at no cost to the Veteran.  The hub’s June Honor Flight will fly on an Americal Airlines private charter out of Capital Region International Aiport in Lansing, Michigan. The Honorees and their flight guardians will be offered housing accommodations the night before and the night of the flight at Michigan State Univeristy (MSU) in East Lansing.

“Flying from our state’s capitol, to our nation’s capitol is such a meaningful beginning and end to this flight. Our Board thought is was an appropriate way to honor our flyers,” commented Elayne McCollum, Board Secretary.

Mid-Michigan Honor Flights current  focus is on World War II Veterans. “We are committed to honoring our outstanding WW II veterans with an experience in our nations capitol,” stated  Todd Purcell. “The average veteran from WW II is in their 90’s, its imperative that we provide them with the opportunity to witness in person the memorial created on their behalf.”

“A “Tour of Honor” for the Mid-Michigan Honor Flight, costs approximatley $104 - $110,000 per trip.  We fly veterans from over 50 Michigan counties. For the comfort and safety of our veterans,  we offer a lodging package for the flyers that are traveling with us.  We are excited to be partnering with MSU for the spring flight lodging option,” stated Tricia Donegan, Hub Director. “Michigan State University is a natural fit for this flight out of the Capital City. It’s all about the Veterans,” she added. “Their comfort and safety is of utmost importance. This way, they are rested prior to the flight, and get more time to connect with each other.”

This June flight will be the 5th Mission for the Hub. Mid-Michigan Honor Flight has taken 259 Veterans to D.C. But there is a waiting list of deserving WW II Veterans hoping to participate in this opportunity. It costs $500 per Veteran to send them on a flight. The success of the Hub’s mission is attributed to the donors that fully fund these experiences.

Interested in getting involved? Mid-Michigan Honor Flight needs to get applications in from World War II Veterans, Korean Veterans and any terminally ill Veteran.
