Put on your running/walking shoes to support McLaren Greater LansingHealthcare Foundation in the annual Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL) Power 5K run/walk on Saturday, August 13. Funds raised benefit McLaren’s Student Athlete Heart Screening Program that prescreens athletes to improve detection of cardiac abnormalities and minimize the risks associated with athletic participation.

McLaren Greater Lansing’s commitment to providing the highest quality healthcare means taking every opportunity to be proactive. In 2011, McLaren Cardiovascular Group and the Foundation launched the region’s first-ever student athlete heart screening program with a goal to help identify potential pre-existing heart conditions that could place an athlete at increased risk of disease progression or even sudden cardiac death.

“We are dedicated to working to improve the health of the Greater Lansing community,” said Tom Mee, RN, BSN, MBA, president and CEO of McLaren Greater Lansing. “Support from area businesses and organizations, like the Board of Water & Light, helps us to accomplish that work.”

The BWL Power 5K run/walk follows a 3.1 mile route that begins at the BWL REO Town
headquarters, 1201 S. Washington Avenue, and continues through city streets. Start time is 9 a.m. and a free kid’s race follows the finish of the 5K.

Last year, 300 runners/walkers crossed the finish line. All racers receive shirts and finishers medals. The top three finishers in each age group also receive awards.

“Events that give back to the community are important,” said Calvin L. Jones, Lansing
Board of Water & Light and member of the McLaren Greater Lansing Healthcare Foundation board. “It is wonderful to support McLaren Greater Lansing Healthcare Foundation and its work with McLaren Greater Lansing to serve the healthcare needs of the Greater Lansing community.”
