Habitat for Humanity of Michigan recognized local Lansing affiliate, Habitat for Humanity Capital Region, at its 20th Annual Awards Banquet in Lansing on Wednesday. The chapter was presented with an Affiliate of the Year Award in honor of its significant accomplishments that have advanced the mission of Habitat for Humanity. Approximately six hundred Habitat staff, volunteers, supporters, and public officials were in attendance.

Habitat for Humanity Capital Region was selected by a panel of judges made up of representatives from Habitat for Humanity of Michigan affiliates who have not entered a candidate in the current year’s awards program, and also the Habitat for Humanity of Michigan Board of Directors. The judges consider the affiliate’s volunteer impact, number of families served, fundraising activities, advocacy actions, community partnerships and best practices. They found Habitat for Humanity Capital Region to excel in these areas.

“It is an honor to be recognized by peers as the Affiliate of the Year. We are proud to work alongside people in need of decent, affordable shelter. My team is committed to building strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter throughout Michigan’s Capital Region. I am grateful to my team, our donors, volunteers and advocates who help make our work possible.” said Vicki Hamilton-Allen, Habitat for Humanity Capital Region’s executive director.

“Our friends at Capital Region had a monumental year in 2015, and the effort resulted in a stronger affiliate that is capable of serving more people in a variety of ways. The Capital Region team have been leading by example, sharing their expertise on the national platform for others to duplicate. A strong Habitat in our state capitol helps all of us,” said Sandra Pearson, president and CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Michigan.

In addition to the Affiliate of the Year Award, Habitat for Humanity of Michigan honored 33 individuals and organizations through six award categories including:

  • Bensen Service Award – Fred Fechheimer, Oakland County resident
  • Corporate Sponsor of the Year Award – Ford Motor Company Fund
  • Homeowner Partner of the Year Award – Latisha Berry, Genesee County resident
  • Public Official of the Year Award – Kevin Elsenheimer. Michigan State Housing Development Authority
  • Local Affiliate Volunteer of the Year Awards – 28 volunteers from throughout Michigan
