Fanatical focus: The key skill we are losing in the workplace and in life

A follow-up with Matt Johnson, president of On Target Living, February keynote speaker of Lansing Economic Club

Here is how you can increase your capacity.

With the monthly publication of the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce (LRCC) titled FOCUS, I thought I would build on my recent presentation regarding a skill that is a huge problem for your organization, your family or yourself — the inability to focus on what actually matters.

Without focus or attention, you cannot do anything at your best, including:

  • Work
  • Relationships
  • Creativity
  • Innovation
  • Leadership
  • Sales
  • School

But ask yourself, when was the last time you practiced this skill? Do you feel that it is getting harder and harder to focus on one thing? Has your company invested in building this skill or are they squandering it?

I want to give you three tactics that can help you get your focus back, and  build your focus for the future.

  1. Put the Device Down. Unplug one hour before bed and after you wake up. Do not have technology in bedroom if you can help it.
  2. Breathing Breaks. The only way to allow the brain to connect with the body is to change how you breathe. Do one to two minutes a day of diaphragmatic breathing. The diaphragm is the second most important muscle in the body after the heart!
  3. Fuel the Mind. Omega-3 fats are the key nutrient that support brain function. You need 1500-3000 mg of DHA and EPA per day to allow the brain to function optimally. I recommend getting 1 tablespoon of both cod liver oil and flaxseeds/chia per day. (You need to grind the flaxseeds to get the benefits of the omega-3’s, you don’t have to grind the chia seeds)

Try these tactics and watch as you get more enjoyment, productivity and love out of life! Remember to focus on what actually matters.

People have asked, ‘Matt, what was it like to speak at the Lansing Economic Club? Boy, what a great question with a long answer, but I’ll keep it short.

Have you ever heard the saying “you are not an expert within 30 miles of where you live?”

This is how we sometimes feel at On Target Living. We spent 2016 in more than 30 plus states, four different countries and worked with hundreds of thousands of people, but we do less than 10 percent of our speaking in our home state and home city of Lansing, Michigan. As someone who was born, raised and currently lives in the Lansing area, this is the area of the world I care the most about! This is an opportunity to engage and educate my favorite place in the world on something I’m passionate about and believe to be important and valuable.

Thank you, Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce, for the opportunity.
