Little moments can result in big outcomes. Motivational speaker and former sports agent Molly Fletcher told the April Lansing Economic Club audience that by overcoming our fears, we create new breakthroughs.

“There are opportunities every day to be a little bit bold,” said Fletcher. “Be a little bit more fearless and that will inspire the people around you.”

Fletcher, an East Lansing native and MSU graduate, turned her college tennis career into a successful career as one of the first female sports agents in the industry. She worked 20 years as an agent before entering a new career as CEO of The Molly Fletcher Company. She tours the U.S. sharing her unconventional and unique techniques that made her one of the most successful agents in the high stakes, big ego world of professional sports and is now a successful entrepreneur. Her latest book, Fearless at Work, highlights five characteristics she says can help people overcome their fears and be more successful.

“After working with athletes for more than two decades, I found the difference between those who reach the ultimate pinnacle of success and those that don’t is often fear,” said Fletcher.

Fletcher highlighted five characteristics she said are needed to be fearless in your work. The first is having a clear purpose.

“What is it all about — what is our why?” asked Fletcher. “We can move forward when we know why we do what we do.”

Other characteristics of fearless leaders according to Fletcher include curiosity, resilience, boldness and taking ownership of how we manage our energy. For Fletcher, that included making the tough decision to drop some clients that were sapping too much of her energy and not allowing her to focus where she could achieve the most.

“We have to manage our energy more than we manage our time,” said Fletcher. “Take ownership of who gets your energy and who doesn’t.”
