Byrum Builders and owner Jim Byrum have been named the 2017 Outstanding Small Business by the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce. For Jim Byrum, the process of building a great business started at a very early age. Byrum started working in the family hardware store at age four. Byrum was helping to manage the stores during his teen years. During that time, he was exposed to the tools, materials and tradespeople of the building industry and learned to interact with customers and working professionals.

Byrum acquired a builder’s license and formed an LLC for his building company, but continued his job at General Motors until 2012, when he then, took Byrum Builders full time. Today, his company has 16 employees and a long list of customers that sing his praises.

“He sets the bar high for what it means to bring service to our community and to model for others what it means to be an honest, responsible, caring and confident business owner,” said Dr. Janet Elaine Alleman Trumbull.

Byrum credits his wife Casey with providing invaluable advice and counsel in areas that he admits are not his strengths. The couple hopes to eventually have their two sons join them in the business. Byrum is proud of his team of workers who he says are selected not only for their skill and experience, but also for their understanding of the company’s goal to give their customers what they are dreaming of with each and every project.

“My goal from the first day was to build exactly what the customers want at the highest quality that is practical,” said Byrum. “I want to always do the work right and be totally honest and forthright with all my customers.

Byrum has demonstrated a commitment to the community in many ways, including serving as President of the Home Builders Association of Greater Lansing. He is a contributor to Habitat for Humanity and St. Vincent Catholic Charities. He also is very active with Radmoor Montessori School donating his services and time and advising on building projects there.
