The Technology for Talent Attraction and Retention

It's a cold, but sunny Saturday morning and you wake up from your first opportunity to sleep in all week. You grab your phone from your nightstand and get caught up on the latest tweets from your favorite news sources, do some online shopping, or maybe even apply for a home loan right from your phone!

This may seem like a normal start to a Saturday, but it wasn’t always this way. Times have changed drastically from a technology perspective and our society is more connected than ever before. Technology has revolutionized the way we engage from buying groceries, to hailing a taxi, filing taxes, and even obtaining approval for a home mortgage.

As the way local organizations conduct business and the way customers buy evolves, local organizations are forced to adapt if they want to remain competitive. IT is one of the fastest growing areas in Greater Lansing at a rate of seven times faster than all other jobs. The labor market is struggling to keep up with the pace of change, positions and skill sets are being created daily that typically did not exist one year prior.

Nationally, IT unemployment is 2.5 percent and less than 2 percent in Lansing, which has created a war for talent. As a byproduct of the increasing technology footprint of businesses - there has been an even larger skills gap within certain sectors of IT, like information security. It has been reported that there are more than 1 Million job openings within InfoSec while there are less than 100,000 information security professionals within industry.

TEKsystems partners with organizations helping them develop strategy for attracting and retaining top talent to their organizations and providing IT services. IT professionals receive an average of 34 solicitations for new opportunities on a weekly basis. It is more important than ever to be able to provide a compelling reason that goes beyond salary and PTO to draw top talent. Companies striving to attract and retain top talent should consider getting creative on how they allow their employees to work and focus on communicating the “why” behind their organization for starters.
