One of the most rewarding aspects of my position with the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce is the opportunity to connect with entrepreneurs, owners and leaders of many of the small businesses that form the economic backbone of our region. I’m amazed by the level of entrepreneurial drive, innovation and creativity that emerge from businesses, whether they are startups or more mature businesses that are fueling new growth, investment and most importantly - jobs in our region.

It is truly rewarding to see hard work and success recognized for its excellence and our region has its share of worthy candidates in that regard. Each year, as part of Michigan Celebrates Small Business Week, Michigan Celebrates Small Business (MCSB) awards honors the best of the best in small business. Congratulations to Saddleback BBQ, which was named Best Small Business of the Year, and if you’ve ever tasted their BBQ, you understand why they receive the plaudits! Also, a much deserved congratulations to Harvest Creative Services, M3 Group and Triterra, for being named as one of 50 Companies to Watch. Lansing Chamber members Joost Vapor and Kunz Leigh & Associates were also named to the 50 Companies list.

The MCSB honors underscore the level of business leadership excellence that has long been a trademark of our region. One of the most important missions that we seek to fill in the region at the Chamber is to ensure that the pipeline of leadership talent in the region will be filled by the best talent anywhere in the world. In that area, I am proud to say our region is at the top of the class!

This month, the Chamber’s Leadership Lansing will graduate its third cohort of outstanding leaders. Forty-two individuals from a diverse group of Chamber members have completed an eight-month program in which they were exposed to a behind thescenes look at leading institutions that make up the economic fabric of our community. Leadership Lansing participants have connected and engaged with outstanding leaders representing a variety of key industry sectors and have received training to enhance their own individual leadership skills. In three years, 115 outstanding leaders have completed the Leadership Lansing program, and as a result, are better equipped to serve as the next generation of community leaders.

In a similar vein, over the past decade the 10 Over the Next Ten Awards have recognized the professional accomplishments of 110 of the best young professionals in our region. Almost every one of those amazing individuals remain connected and committed to our region, and combined with our Leadership Lansing graduates form the nucleus of a potentially powerful network of talent that will propel the region to new levels of greatness.

The common theme that runs central through all of the success stories in the past, present and future is the importance of talent to the success of our community and in building an outstanding quality of life in the region. We are fortunate to have the business leadership working in conjunction with educators in K-12 and higher education to develop talent and build a region that will be second to none.
