Jorgieann Stoneham, RN at McLaren Greater Lansing, has been recognized as one of the Lansing Latino Health Association’s 2017 Outstanding Hispanic/Latino Caregivers.

This award is given annually to a caregiver who has made a significant difference in the life of a patient, exceeded expectations in carrying out their responsibilities, and demonstrated professionalism in the workplace. Stoneham was nominated by a coworker for exemplifying excellence in those areas. An excerpt of the nomination is included below:

“I would like to nominate Jorgieann Stoneham, RN for the Outstanding Latino/Hispanic Caregiver award. Jorgieann has been an employee of McLaren Greater Lansing for 14 years and has impacted the lives of many patients in her various roles. She started out as a nursing assistant before obtaining her RN degree. She worked as a stroke and ICU nurse before finding her way to the quality improvement (QI) department. She has been part of two different Blue Cross/Blue Shield (BCBS) quality collaboratives that focus on improving patient outcomes. Although she no longer is a bedside nurse, she still works hard to keep patients safe with the creation of prehabilitation kits.

The prehabilitation kits consist of educational materials, incentive spirometer, pedometer, mouthwash, and an antibacterial soap. This kit is designed to instruct patients on actions they can take preoperatively to improve post-operative complications such as pneumonia, surgical site infections (SSI), emergency department (ED) visits, and readmissions.

Because of Jorgieann’s hard work our hospital has seen improvement in all areas: ED visits went from 9.74% to 7.15%; Readmission rate from 8.43% to 6.26%; Pneumonia rates from 2.04% to 0.2%; and SSI rates from 2.71% to 0.72% in this selected population. We are excited to continue to improve MGL patient outcomes and strive to provide the best care, every patient, every time. It is staff members like Jorgieann who help make that possible!”

The Lansing Latino Health Alliance was founded as an advocacy organization in 2003 with the mission of raising the health status of Latinos in the greater Lansing area. Since 2003, the Alliance has informed the community and policy makers of health discrepancies and health needs of Latinos, has advocated for change and improvement, and has testified before legislative committees on these issues. The Alliance has regularly collaborated with Lansing hospitals on various projects.
