The Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce (LRCC) is deeply concerned by the House Republicans’ proposed state budget cuts that would significantly reduce funding for Michigan State University (MSU) and other public research institutions across Michigan.

At a time when states across the country are aggressively competing for talent, innovation, and economic growth, reducing investment in higher education, particularly at world class research universities, signals the wrong priorities for Michigan’s future.

“If Michigan is serious about competing in the global economy, we should be doubling down on institutions like Michigan State University and University of Michigan, not pulling back,” said Tim Daman, President and CEO of the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Daman emphasized that Michigan State University is not only a cornerstone of the Lansing regional economy, but also a global leader in research, talent development, and innovation.

“MSU’s impact reaches far beyond our region,” Daman added. “From cutting edge research and agricultural advancements to workforce development and startup creation, MSU plays a critical role in driving economic opportunity across Michigan and around the world.”

The LRCC believes that sustained and strategic investment in higher education is essential to strengthening Michigan’s competitiveness, attracting and retaining talent, and supporting emerging industries that will define the next generation of economic growth.

“Now is the time to invest in our strengths,” Daman said. “Our research universities are among Michigan’s greatest assets. We should be building on that foundation, not weakening it.”

The Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce will continue to advocate for policies that support economic growth, innovation, and a strong talent pipeline for the Lansing region and the state of Michigan.
