We are deeply disappointed to learn that Mike Duggan has withdrawn from the Michigan gubernatorial race. Our early endorsement of Mike was not made lightly. It was a bold and deliberate decision rooted in our firm belief that he was the right leader for Michigan at this critical moment.

Mike Duggan’s record speaks for itself. As Mayor of Detroit, he led one of the most remarkable urban turnarounds in modern American history, revitalizing neighborhoods, attracting billions in investment, reducing blight, lowering crime, and restoring a sense of pride and possibility to a city that many had written off. That kind of transformational leadership is exactly what the state of Michigan deserves.

Michigan faces real challenges, from rebuilding its infrastructure and diversifying its economy, to ensuring every community, urban and rural alike, has access to opportunity. Mike Duggan had the vision, the toughness, and the proven track record to meet those challenges head-on. His absence from this race is a genuine loss for our state.

We respect Mike’s decision and are grateful for his decades of public service. We wish him well, and we hope his voice and leadership continues to shape Michigan’s future in whatever capacity he chooses.

As the field of candidates moves forward, we issue a challenge and a call to action: Michigan’s voters deserve a serious, substantive conversation about the issues that will define this state’s future. We hope the remaining candidates will rise to that occasion.

Michigan needs bold ideas and concrete plans around economic development, attracting new industries while supporting the small businesses that are the backbone of our communities. We need a serious conversation about education, ensuring every child in every zip code has access to a quality school and a pathway to a productive future. Our roads, bridges, water systems, and broadband infrastructure demand urgent attention and long-term investment. And perhaps most critically, Michigan must address its population challenges head-on, retaining our young talent, welcoming new residents, and creating the kind of vibrant, livable communities that people choose to call home.

These are not abstract policy debates. They are kitchen table issues that affect the daily lives of Michigan families. The candidates who remain in this race have an obligation to speak directly to these challenges, with specificity, with urgency, and with real solutions. We are listening, and so are the people of Michigan.
