LANSING, MI — The Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce (LRCC), joined by businesses and community stakeholders from across the Greater Lansing region, is expressing strong support for The Howard redevelopment proposal in downtown East Lansing.

In a letter submitted to the East Lansing Planning Commission and East Lansing City Council, the LRCC and its partners highlighted the project’s potential economic, environmental, and community benefits for both East Lansing and the broader region.

“The Howard represents the type of bold, forward-looking investment communities must embrace to remain competitive and continue growing,” said Steve Japinga, SVP of Public Affairs at the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce. “This project further positions East Lansing as a leader in innovation, sustainability, housing, and economic development while strengthening the region’s long-term competitiveness.”

The mixed-use development, led by Harbor Bay and The Ballein Family, would utilize Mass Timber construction, an emerging building technology recognized internationally for its environmental and economic advantages.

The LRCC also noted East Lansing serves as a vital economic engine for the region due to its connection to Michigan State University and its reputation as a hub for innovation, talent attraction, and commerce.

Additionally, the support letter emphasized the project’s alignment with Michigan’s forestry and sustainability industries, noting that The Howard would demonstrate how environmental stewardship and economic growth can work hand in hand.

“This is about more than a single development project,” Japinga added. “It is about whether our region is prepared to support transformative investments that help us compete with other communities across Michigan and the country.”

The LRCC respectfully encouraged the East Lansing Planning Commission and East Lansing City Council to support the proposal as it moves through the review process.
