Public Safety Remains Most Important Issue to Voters as City Election Looms

(Lansing, MI – A new poll commissioned by Advance Greater Lansing shows that significantly more voters in the city of Lansing feel the city is headed in the right direction. The poll of Lansing voters was conducted by Greenlee Consulting during the week of October 19. Results show that 43.9% of voters feel Lansing is headed in the right direction. That is up from 33.2% in a similar poll conducted in May 2023.

“The upswing in positivity among Lansing voters in just five months’ time is encouraging,” said Tim Daman, president & CEO, Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce (LRCC). “What is important now is for the city to have elected officials who are absolutely committed to doing what it takes to address several high priority issues that voters are telling us matter most to them.”

The Advance Greater Lansing Poll identifies several hot button issues that have clearly been resonating with voters for the past few years. When asked what issue they believe is the most important for their city officials to address, 32.8% said public safety, followed by roads (18.7%), housing (16.6%) and neighborhoods (16.1%).

The poll results come as the November 7 General Election draws near and voters in Lansing prepare to elect four members to the eight-person city council.

“Voters are clearly saying that public safety is a glaring need that requires immediate, sustained effort by their elected officials,” said Steve Japinga, senior vice president for public affairs, LRCC. “This should be viewed as an all-hands-on deck situation. We will be working closely with our elected officials to identify the best policy approaches to enhance public safety, fix our infrastructure, work to provide housing options for all, and strengthening our neighborhoods.”
