Local schools benefit from fundraiser that demonstrates ‘shop local’ power

More than $1,300 was raised for schools in Lansing, Okemos and Grand Ledge during the Nov. 18 “Shop for Schools” event at Lansing’s Old Town.

The Old Town merchants that participated in the fundraiser donated 18 percent of their profits for Saturday, Nov. 18, to schools selected by shoppers.

“Shopping at independent, locally owned businesses is important to a strong economy because it keeps more money in the community, increasing the tax base that directly benefits our children and schools,” said Lynn Ross, owner of Mother & Earth Baby Boutique. “Our ‘Shop for School” event doubled down on this financial help to our schools. The money raised will help pay for extras such as supplies, camp fees and scholarships.”

School organizations that benefited from the event were the Lansing Educational Advancement Foundation on behalf of the Lansing School District and St. Gerard Catholic School in Lansing; Cornell Elementary School, Chippewa Middle School, Hiawatha Elementary School, Kinawa 5-6 School and Okemos Public Montessori at Central PTO in Okemos; and St. Michael Parish School PTO, Grand Ledge.

The 17 Old Town merchants participating in the shop-local fundraiser were Absolute Gallery, Bloom Coffee Roasters, CoCo Blue, Cravings Gourmet Popcorn, Curvaceous Lingerie, Grace Boutique of Old Town, Great Lakes Arts and Gifts, Metro Retro, Mother & Earth Baby Boutique, October Moon, Old Town General Store, Polka Dots, Preuss Pets, Retail Therapy, Sir Pizza Grand Café, SPIN Bicycle Shop, Sweet Custom Jewelry and The Life That’s Lived There Vintage Marketplace.

Ross also thanked LAFCU for the mid-Michigan credit union’s help in collecting and distributing the funds for the educational organizations.
